How to Lead a Frugal Life

Trying to lead a frugal lifestyle can be hard for some people. But if you are determined to start saving, you will be able to do it. Start small and you can have better control over your personal finances.

1. Plan How Much You are Willing to Spend

Think of how much money you have or will have with you for the whole week. At the start of that week, determine what your possible expenses are. Allot certain amounts for the things that you need to spend.

2. Save on Food

In a person or in a household’s budget, food always takes up the biggest portion. Saving your money on food does not mean starving yourself. This just means that you might still make a few adjustments into eating more practical food choices.

First of all, don’t buy food that you won’t be able to consume. If you always end up throwing out leftover pizza or milk, water conservation you should consider getting smaller servings of these products. Another way by which you can save on food is by substitutions.

Some brands might be more expensive than others. Don’t feel guilty about leaving the brand which you have used since. You will be able to save a lot if you can substitute cheaper items for the expensive brands.

3. Compare Prices

Be patient and take time to compare prices of similar products. You may also compare prices between several stores.

4. Save Electricity

There are several methods by which you can save on your electric bill. Use energy efficient lighting fixtures. Cut down on your TV watching hours. Do regular maintenance of your air conditioning unit.

5. Stick to your Shopping List

A lot of people are impulsive buyers. If you think you are an impulsive buyer, you have to make a list before you set out to shop. It is very important that you stick to this list.

6. Use Cash

Using a credit card can be very convenient. It is also considered safe. However, if your priority is to save money, you have to sacrifice that little convenience and count your money up to the last penny every time you have to buy something.

When you are out to buy something, bring the exact amount of money. You will not be tempted to buy more than what you originally planned to get.

7. Recycle Clothes

You don’t need to buy new clothes every so often. Let out your creative side and mix and match clothing items. You may even tear down some dresses and turn them into blouses or you may cut old jeans and make them into shorts.

8. Make Your Own Stuff

There are a lot of things that you can build or create on your own. You may make your own scented candles. You may even cook luxurious recipes on your own. You will have full control over how much you are willing to spend. You get to have the same benefits for a much lower price.

Gifts are another example of things that you can make on your own. Really, it is the thought that counts if you are going to give a gift to a close friend or a member of your family. Writing a note, drawing a picture or making crafts can be more special for the recipient.

9. Carpool

In order to save gas, find a co-worker who lives near your area. You can do this with several other people as well. Alternate days in which one of you will have to drive.
