Link building or link creating is one of the best ways to generate traffic to your website and increase your rankings. You can go about this a few different ways, but my opinion is to embrace all avenues of link building. Having a diversified link building strategy will help you to avoid getting penalized by Google.
Here is my list for the top five best practices and strategies for link building that won’t get your site penalized. This list is in no particular order as I see them all equally important.

Directories can be hit or miss so carefully choose which ones you submit your website to. If you add your site to a directory that is junky then it could, in turn, penalize your site. Obviously, you can trust the more famous sites like Yelp or Angie’s List, these are the kind of directories that you should start with.
When it comes to directories consider finding and submitting to niche directories. Niche directories are directories that are specific as to the product or service that they offer.
4. Manual Link Submission
This method takes a little more time and energy but can be very effective. Search through websites that are in your same type of industry and request that they link to your site. It can be mutually beneficial.
Acquiring links on sites where your competitors have linked is a great strategy to consider when searching for where to link.
3. Internal Links
When link building you shouldn’t rule out the benefit of internal linking. Creating internal links on your website is a great practice because new pages that you create will be crawled by Google and indexed properly. It is also nice for your human audience as it will encourage them to discover more pages and content that your site offers.
If you offer quality, relevant content on your site then you will be linked to by others. Make sure that you have “share” options on your site so that viewers can post your articles or website to their social media sites.
Remember, content is the big picture. Most people surf the web to view the content of some sort so you should do your best to make sure that your content isn’t cookie cutter, but original and relevant. Give your audience something that they don’t get from other websites.

Viral content can work miracles for your SEO. A good example is a free code such as calendars etc. that people like to embed on their sites can backlink to your site. Social media can play a big part here too as people will like to share and “like” such things.
You should always be careful when you are link building. You don’t want to get your site penalized by practicing shady techniques or submitting to bad websites. Good SEO takes time to see the results, so you have to be patient. You will get long term results though if you practice ethical techniques.
