Mouth Sores are the most hated problem faced by anyone. It is often painful and stops one from eating hot and spicy food. Canker sores, fever blisters, leukoplakia are the most common mouth sores. They can be symptoms to any disease, bacterial or fungal infection, infection from a sharp edge of a tooth, side effects of strong medicines, etc.
Mouth and tongue sores causes include- stress, alcohol, tobacco, hormonal changes, etc.
Canker sores appear inside the mouth and are not contagious. They are small red or white shallow ulcers occurring on the tongue, inside cheeks, inside lips or soft palate. Causes of canker sores can be a fungal or bacterial infection, a cut in cheek caused by biting the cheek while chewing some food, etc.
They usually heal themselves in a week or two and needs no medical help until; their occurrences are increasing rapidly and not healing. Treatment for canker sores involves- staying away from hot, spicy and acidic foods. Acidic fruits like orange, lemon can cause more irritation on the sore. Home remedies for mouth sores can be effective. Apply some fresh cream to soothe the burning sensation. Cleaning your mouth with cold water will help reduce the infection.
Fever Blisters or Cold Sores
These are the ones which occur outside the mouth, particularly on and around the lips. There are very fewer possibilities of the fever blisters to appear on chin, cheek, nose or nostrils. Cold sores are contagious and are caused by the herpes virus. Temperature extremes, fatigue, menstruation cycle, consumption of excess alcohol, etc. are common causes of the cold sore.
When the cold sore is about to appear, the area will tingle slightly and will rise with some redness around it. It is advised to take proper measures while one is having a cold sore, as being a contagious sore it can spread the virus easily, in case of direct contact with the infected person. Cold sore can spread on your own body also; a simple way to prevent is to not touch the sore. It will heal itself in a week or so. It is suggested to avoid consumption of spicy and hot food items until the sore heals. However, applying an ice pack on the sore will relieve the itching sensation.
White color patches that are formed inside of the cheeks, tongues or gums are called leukoplakia. People who chew tobacco and similar products are likely to get infected with this. Leukoplakia patches if not recovered in more than a week, it is advised to consult a doctor. The doctor will examine the case and would suggest an appropriate solution. To prevent leukoplakia, one should limit the intake of tobacco and alcohol. Sometimes, it is related to oral cancer.
To prevent any type of mouth sore
drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and tobacco, have a balanced diet, don’t drink very hot drinks, chew slowly, have good dental hygiene, etc. Be sure to consult the doctor at the earliest if you see no chances of the sore healing.
